You can also add cheap upgrades from the VW R36 or GTI/GLI because modders are always selling take-off parts.  Yes I know a 90's geo metro gets great mileage too but the point is that it's a car with modern conveniences, good safety, and a decent looking car.  From what I've heard, BMWs are not reliable. The new Jetta is recommended by consumer reports and has average reliabilty.  Older ones are not as reliable and the older auto transmissions were bad.  The new auto/DSG dual clutch transmission is good though.  If you've never driven a DSG-type transmission, it removes all stigma from an "auto".   PS, Dinero drove an 850 in the movie Heat.
